Data quality in research: Gold for one, poison for another

If anyone knows what quality data means, that is Prof. Dr. Carsten Oliver Schmidt. As the director of "Quality in health research" in the "Study of Health in Pomerania – clinical-epidemiological research" (SHIP-KEF) department at the Greifswald University medical faculty, he has to reply to the question of data quality for different scientific fields again and again. In this interview with VIEW he shares his knowledge and experience and explains why the perfect data set is a myth.

Escape from the data dilemma

The more data the better the therapy decision and greater success with treatment. Sounds good in theory. But rarely happens in practice. At least not without more factors. Because – and this is something health institutions prefer not to discuss – much of the medical data circulating in hospitals have no additional benefit. In the worst case the data are detrimental. How can this happen? Very simple: data as such have no value. Value must first be added.

JiveX HCM at the Clinique de La Source: Best service, satisfied "customers"

The Clinique de La Source in Lausanne, Switzerland, is a classic hospital for external medical consultants offering 150 beds and a surgical focus. The surgical interventions, which include demanding procedures in the areas of the head and spine or the digestive and urinary systems, are performed exclusively by external surgeons from the Lausanne region. Some 600 physicians make up the referring physicians admitted to the Clinique de La Source. Of these, a good 60 of them operate regularly in the clinic. The fact that the Clinic de La Source is in such high demand is the result of a large-scale service initiative: the clinic management regards the surgeons as customers to whom they wish to offer a unique service. The demands on the technical equipment of the facility are correspondingly high.
