Digitization saves resources

Hospitals are also increasingly coming under "sustainability pressure". Not only do patients expect excellent medical care, they also expect a high level of ecological and social awareness. New regulatory requirements also require hospitals above a certain size to account for their sustainability efforts. IT can help in several ways here, as Frank Dzukowski, Head of Sustainability at Eppendorf University Hospital (UKE) in Hamburg, explains in an interview with VIEW.

Shortage of skilled staff in IT

Nearly 100,000 jobs remained vacant in the IT industry in 2021. And the health care sector proved no exception. No matter whether in hospitals and medical practices or in health IT companies: good people are hard to find. And this although conditions could be worse, as the industry now offers flexible working models and the sense of "purpose" so often desired by young professionals. After all, intelligent software solutions and their application have a direct impact on people's well-being. Are the gaps in staffing levels based on a lack of young talent, unattractive terms and conditions, or the reputation of the profession itself? This is the question we asked Prof. Dr. Bernhard Breil, Professor of Health Informatics at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld.

The cloud, your friend and helper

The question of whether hospital IT should move to the cloud or not is no longer an issue these days. It has already moved there, and will expand even faster in the future. Far more important is the question of which functionalities are operated "as-a-service" and to what extent. Answers to this question are presently being discussed intensively in the German Association of Hospital IT Managers (KH-IT). There is consensus that cloud solutions will be indispensable in the future to compensate for the shortage of skilled personnel.

VISUS Cloud - Next Level

Not secure enough, not individual enough, too intransparent, too cloudy: solutions from the cloud were frowned upon in healthcare for a long time. One important reason for this was data protection and the question of which servers the data is located on, how they gets there, and who can access them. Furthermore, there were concerns about dependency on the service provider and the loss of data sovereignty. And finally, there was the question of what benefits the cloud actually provides. Meanwhile, strict rejection has given way to a healthy curiosity. In part, because providers like VISUS can deliver convincing answers to the most pressing questions.

How the cloud makes for clear weather

If cloud technologies and software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions are to be successful in gaining a foothold in medicine, then open questions must be critically addressed. We would like to set important impulses on these issues in the VIEW. We therefore approached Bernd Schütze - and received answers that were as unvarnished as they were profound and valuable in practice. Bernd Schütze heads the working group on data protection and IT security in the healthcare sector at GMDS , he studied medicine, computer sciences and law and completed additional training as a data protection specialist.
